History of the tree fern Dicksonia antarctica
The tree fern Dicksonia antarctica comes from the humid, temperate rainforests of Australia and Tasmania. This prehistoric-looking plant has existed for millions of years and is one of the oldest fern species on Earth. It is becoming increasingly popular in tropical-style gardens and as a special container or houseplant – above all because of its distinctive trunk and majestic, fan-like fronds.
Care as a houseplant:
-
Light: Bright spot without direct midday sun; partial shade is also well tolerated.
-
Temperature: Ideally 16–24 °C; do not keep below 10 °C.
-
Humidity: High (over 60%); daily misting is recommended.
-
Substrate: Humus-rich, free-draining soil, e.g. a mix of potting soil, composted bark and perlite.
-
Watering: Keep evenly moist; the trunk should also be moistened regularly. No waterlogging.
-
Feeding: Every 4 weeks in spring and summer with a weak liquid fertiliser.
-
Special features: This houseplant loves stable conditions and is sensitive to dry air and changes of location.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, keep it bright and cool (10–15 °C), maintain humidity and water less. Dicksonia antarctica is an impressive houseplant with a long history, suited to lovers of lush, green exotics.
