History of the Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ plant)

The ZZ plant (botanical name: Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is known in German as the 'lucky feather' because in many cultures it is regarded as a symbol of luck, prosperity and positive energy. With its glossy, dark green leaves and robust growth, it is an ideal choice for beginners and busy plant lovers. Thanks to its ability to store water in its thick, fleshy leaf stalks, it is particularly adaptable and forgiving of care mistakes.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright to partially shaded spot; also tolerates shady places, but no direct sunlight.
  • Temperature: Ideally 18–26 °C, at least 15 °C in winter.
  • Humidity: Tolerant of dry room air; no additional misting necessary.
  • Substrate: Free-draining soil, e.g. potting soil with sand or perlite, to avoid waterlogging.
  • Watering: Low water requirements; only water when the substrate is completely dry. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
  • Feeding: Every 6–8 weeks with a weak foliage plant fertiliser during the growing phase.

Care tips:

  • The Zamioculcas is extremely robust but should not be watered too often, as it is sensitive to waterlogging.
  • Repot every 2–3 years once the pot is completely filled with roots.
  • Regularly remove dead or yellow leaves to keep the plant healthy.
