History of the Euphorbia Trigona Rubra
Euphorbia Trigona Rubra, also known as the red African milk tree, comes from Central Africa and belongs to the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae). It looks like a cactus, but is not a true cactus. Its three-sided, upright shoots are covered with small spines and have a striking reddish green colouring that becomes more intense depending on the light. As a robust houseplant, it is particularly easy to care for and ideal for sunny spots.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Very bright spot, ideally direct sun.
- Temperature: Ideally 18–30 °C; do not keep below 12 °C.
- Humidity: Tolerant of dry air, ideal for indoors.
- Substrate: Cactus or succulent soil with good drainage.
- Watering: Water moderately, only once the substrate is completely dry; be sure to avoid waterlogging.
- Feeding: Every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with cactus fertiliser.
- Special features: This houseplant contains a toxic milky sap that can irritate the skin – wear gloves when repotting.
Overwintering tips:
Water less and do not let temperatures drop below 12 °C. A bright spot helps maintain growth. The Euphorbia Trigona Rubra is an easy-care, decorative houseplant with exotic charm.
