Product information "Philodendron Pedatum Moss Pole - Ø21 cm"

History of the Philodendron pedatum

Philodendron pedatum is a fascinating tropical climbing philodendron from the arum family (Araceae) and originally comes from the tropical regions of South America. Its deeply lobed leaves are particularly striking; they become increasingly pronounced as the plant matures and give it an unusual, almost fern-like look. The young leaves are often simpler in shape at first and only develop their characteristic form over time. With its climbing shoots, Philodendron pedatum is particularly well suited to growing on a moss pole or another climbing support. Pet owners should take care, however, as philodendrons contain calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic to cats and dogs.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright to partially shaded with plenty of indirect light. Avoid intense midday sun, as it can damage the leaves.
  • Temperature: Around 18–26 °C all year round is ideal. Avoid temperatures below 16 °C where possible.
  • Humidity: Increased humidity is preferred. Levels of around 60 % and above support strong growth and beautiful leaf development.
  • Substrate: A loose, airy and free-draining aroid substrate made of bark, perlite, coconut material and some humus-rich soil is ideal.
  • Watering: Water evenly but moderately. The top layer of substrate may dry out slightly between waterings. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
  • Feeding: During the growing season from spring to autumn, feed about every 2–3 weeks with a weakly dosed foliage plant fertiliser. Feed less in winter.
  • Special features: As it matures, Philodendron pedatum can develop increasingly lobed and larger leaves. A bright spot and a good supply of nutrients encourage this development. Check the leaves regularly for pests.
  • Moss pole: A climbing support is highly recommended. On a moss pole, the plant can follow its natural climbing habit and, in good conditions, develop larger and more pronounced leaves.
  • Important for pet owners: Philodendron pedatum is not suitable for cats and dogs. If nibbled, the calcium oxalate crystals it contains can cause severe irritation in the mouth and throat, drooling, difficulty swallowing and vomiting.

Overwintering tips:

Philodendron pedatum should be kept warm and as bright as possible all year round. In winter, because there is less light, water more carefully and reduce feeding. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 16 °C where possible. Sufficiently high humidity helps prevent dry leaf tips during the heating season.
