History of the Schefflera arboricola Compacta
The Schefflera arboricola Compacta, also known as the dwarf umbrella tree, originally comes from Taiwan and belongs to the ivy family (Araliaceae). This compact houseplant is characterised by its dense, bushy growth and glossy green, finger-shaped leaves. It is extremely easy to care for, robust and improves indoor air quality.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright to partially shaded spot; avoid direct midday sun.
- Temperature: 18–25 °C is ideal; avoid temperatures below 12 °C.
- Humidity: Medium to high; occasional misting promotes healthy leaves.
- Substrate: Free-draining potting soil with some sand or perlite.
- Watering: Water moderately as soon as the top layer of soil is dry; avoid waterlogging.
- Feeding: Every 4 weeks with liquid fertiliser for foliage plants during the growing season.
- Special features: This houseplant may drop leaves if it gets too little light or is suddenly moved, but it usually recovers quickly.
Overwintering tips:
Water less and do not let temperatures fall below 12 °C. A bright spot is important so that the plant stays compact. The Schefflera arboricola Compacta is an easy-care, long-lived houseplant that is ideal for flats and offices.
