History of the Euphorbia erytrea
Euphorbia erytrea is an impressive, columnar succulent that can easily be mistaken for a cactus at first glance. In fact, however, it belongs to the spurge family. Its sturdy, upright shoots have pronounced ribs and, as it gets older, form a characteristic branched habit. The species originally comes from dry regions of Africa, where it is adapted to plenty of sun, warmth and long dry periods. Thanks to its architectural growth, it makes an excellent decorative houseplant and gives modern living spaces an exotic, sculptural character.
Care as a houseplant:
• Light: Very bright to sunny position. Several hours of direct sun a day are well tolerated and encourage strong, upright growth.
• Temperature: Ideally 18–30 °C; avoid temperatures below 10–12 °C if possible.
• Humidity: Low to medium; dry indoor air is tolerated very well.
• Substrate: Very free-draining cactus or succulent substrate with a high mineral content. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
• Watering: Water sparingly and let the substrate dry out completely between waterings. Always let excess water drain away.
• Feeding: During the growing season, feed about every 4–6 weeks with a weakly dosed cactus or succulent fertiliser.
• Special features: Its columnar, architectural form makes Euphorbia erytrea an impressive eye-catcher. Under good conditions, it can grow considerably taller over the years as a houseplant. A white milky sap is released when it is cut or damaged, so gloves should be worn.
• Important for pet owners: Euphorbia erytrea is not pet-friendly. The sap it releases can irritate skin and mucous membranes and is harmful to pets if swallowed. The plant should therefore be placed out of reach of cats, dogs and other pets.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, keep it as bright as possible and on the dry side. Reduce watering considerably and let the substrate dry out completely between waterings. Keep temperatures above 12 °C if possible and avoid cold draughts. In a very bright spot the plant can stay attractive in winter too, but needs considerably less water.
