History of the Canary Island date palm (Phoenix canariensis)

The Canary Island date palm comes from the Canary Islands and belongs to the palm family. It is known for its imposing appearance, with a sturdy trunk and spreading fronds. In Mediterranean regions it is often used as an ornamental tree, while in colder climates it is popular as a container plant.

Care as a container plant:

  • Light: Sunny to partially shaded spot, prefers direct sun.
  • Temperature: 15–30 °C is ideal; tolerates down to 5 °C for short periods.
  • Humidity: Adaptable, copes well with dry air.
  • Substrate: Free-draining, sandy soil; special palm soil is ideal.
  • Watering: Keep evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging.
  • Feeding: Feed with palm fertiliser every 2–4 weeks from spring to autumn.
  • Special features: A very robust container plant; needs larger pots as it gets older.

winter:

The palm is only partially hardy. In regions with frost, it should be overwintered in a cool, bright place (5–10 °C). Alternatively, it can be protected outdoors with fleece and root protection. Reduce watering in winter.
