  • Substrate: A free-draining, slightly acidic substrate, such as a mixture of potting soil and sand, provides optimal conditions.
  • Watering: Keep evenly moist without causing waterlogging. Let the top layer of soil dry out before watering.
  • Feeding: Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring to autumn) with a liquid fertiliser for foliage plants.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years, as soon as the roots fill the pot.

Care as a container/seasonal plant:

  • Light: In summer, place outdoors in a semi-shaded to bright spot, but protect from intense midday sun.
  • Temperature: The areca palm does not tolerate temperatures below 15 °C and should be brought indoors before the cold sets in.
  • Watering: Water regularly and make sure excess water can drain away well.
  • Feeding: Feed every 2 weeks during the growing season to encourage healthy growth.
  • Overwintering: The palm should overwinter in a bright spot at a minimum of 16 °C.

Overwintering tips:

During the winter months, the areca palm needs less water. The substrate should dry slightly between waterings without drying out completely. Temperatures should be kept constantly above 16 °C, as the plant is sensitive to cold. Sufficient humidity remains essential in winter too – misting or a humidifier help meet its tropical needs.
