History of the Euphorbia trigona
Euphorbia trigona, also called the African milk tree, comes from Central Africa and is an easy-care, succulent houseplant. With its three-edged, upright shoots and small leaves, it looks like a cactus but belongs to the spurge family. Thanks to its rapid growth and robustness, it is a popular choice for plant lovers.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Sunny to very bright spot; direct sunlight is also well tolerated.
- Temperature: Ideally 20–30 °C; do not keep below 12 °C.
- Humidity: Copes well with dry air; no additional misting needed.
- Substrate: Free-draining, sandy cactus compost or a mix of potting soil with sand/perlite.
- Watering: Water moderately, only once the substrate has dried out completely. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
- Feeding: Feed every 4 weeks with cactus fertiliser from spring to autumn.
- Special features: This houseplant contains a toxic milky sap that can cause skin irritation – take care when cutting or repotting!
Overwintering tips:
In winter, water more sparingly and do not let temperatures drop below 12 °C. Euphorbia trigona is an extremely easy-care houseplant whose extraordinary, columnar growth makes it a real highlight in any collection.
